Un articolo del 1877
Questo Brooklyn passa per un sobborgo di Nova York, ma viceversa poi ha una popolazione di 507,000 abitanti; è superiore quindi alle più popolose città d’Italia. Abbreviamo il racconto che i fogli americani ci hanno recato di quell’ incendio.
L’incendio si apprese primieramente ad una cortina verso le 9. Gli spettatori di platea e delle sedie che erano vicini alle porte, hanno potuto facilmente uscire e salvarsi. Ma in altre condizioni erano gli spettatori delle gallerie superiori. Non potevasi comunicare con queste gallerie che per mezzo di una piccola e stretta scala, costeggiata da una cancellata di ferro. Alle grida: il fuoco! La folla si precipitò verso questa scala. E siccome le gallerie contenevano circa 500 persone, la cancellata non tardò a cedere agli sforzi dei molti che si affollavano per la scala. Rotta la cancellata, un gran numero di persone furono precipitate nel fondo dell’edificio, dove, pochi minuti appresso, si vide l’orribile spettacolo di un mucchio di cadaveri stesi gli uni sugli altri. Parecchi di questi infelici morirono di botto; altri furono soffocati, schiacciati, infranti dal peso dei corpi che non cessavano di scendere dall’alto.
Il fuoco, estendendosi a tutto il teatro, raggiunse presto quegli infelici spettatori che erano riusciti ad aggrapparsi a quel po’ di scala rimasta in piedi. Le fiamme li avvilupparono nelle loro spire. In breve sentirono la scala mancare sotto i loro piedi e furono alla loro volta precipitati sul mucchio sottostante di cadaveri. E tutto quell’ ammasso di carne umana fu, in pochi minuti, ridotto in cenere.
Incominciò l’inchiesta del coroner. Si vuol sapere se vi sono dei colpevoli di negligenza. Asseriscono alcuni testimoni che nel teatro non eravi acqua nè pompe per ispegnere l’incendio. Devesi poter sapere se avrebbesi potuto, si o no, vincere più prontamente l’incendio.
Le scene poi successe davanti al teatro furono tali da stringere il cuore. Circa la metà dei morti sono talmente carbonizzati da non essere più riconoscibili. L’inchiesta ha provato che mancano 170 delle persone entrate in teatro. E soltanto 170 corpi, sopra 320 ritirati dalle rovine del teatro, furono riconosciuti. I lavori di sgombero continuano.
La città tutta è costernata. Il lutto è generale. Parecchie vittime lasciano le loro famiglie in condizioni degne del più vivo interesse.
Furono aperte delle sottoscrizioni dappertutto, in America ed in Inghilterra, al fine ci soccorrere le famiglie bisognose che questo accidente ha ridotto nella miseria.
Brooklyn Theater Fire – 1877

This Brooklyn passes for a suburb of New York, but vice versa then has a population of 507,000 inhabitants; it is therefore superior to the most populous cities in Italy. Let’s summarize the story that the American papers gave us of that fire.
The fire was first reported in a curtain around 9am. The spectators in the stalls and in the chairs who were near the doors were able to easily get out and save themselves. But in other conditions they were the spectators in the upper galleries. It was only possible to communicate with these galleries by means of a small and narrow staircase, flanked by an iron gate. To the shouts: fire! The crowd rushed towards this staircase. And since the galleries contained around 500 people, the gate did not take long to give in to the efforts of the many who crowded the staircase. Once the gate was broken, a large number of people were thrown to the bottom of the building, where, a few minutes later, the horrible spectacle of a pile of corpses lying on top of each other was seen. Several of these unfortunates died suddenly; others were suffocated, crushed, broken by the weight of the bodies that continued to descend from above.
The fire, spreading throughout the theater, soon reached those unfortunate spectators who had managed to cling to the little bit of ladder that remained standing. The flames enveloped them in their coils. Soon they felt the ladder fail under their feet and they were also thrown onto the pile of corpses below. And all that mass of human flesh was, in a few minutes, reduced to ashes.
The coroner’s inquest began. We want to know if there are anyone guilty of negligence. Some witnesses claim that there was no water or pumps in the theater to put out the fire. It must be possible to know whether the fire could have been conquered more promptly, yes or no.
The scenes that then happened in front of the theater were heartbreaking. About half of the dead are so charred that they are no longer recognisable. The investigation proved that 170 of the people who entered the theater were missing. And only 170 bodies, out of 320 removed from the ruins of the theater, were recognized. The clearing work continues.
The whole city is dismayed. The mourning is general. Many victims leave their families in conditions worthy of the deepest interest.
Subscriptions were opened everywhere, in America and England, in order to help the needy families who this accident had reduced to poverty.
